“Hey Mom, it’s so good to see you.”

“Oh honey I have missed this handsome face.” she says with a hand on each side of my face.

“I’m so glad you could come for a few days.”

“Did Arianna come with you?”

“No she’s with Lizzie until we get back.”

“Oh I was hoping she’d be with you.”

“You’ll see her enough when we get back. Lizzie’s letting her stay with us as much as we want.”

“Letting her? You’re her father Jonathan; you should be able to spend however much time you want with your child, without needing her aunt’s permission.”

“Calm down mom, that’s not what I meant. I meant that she told me to let her know if I needed her to watch Arianna any time while you’re here.”

“Oh so you didn’t have to ask to have her?”

“Not at all, Lizzie assumed I would want to have Arianna as much as possible while you’re here.”

“Well, maybe she isn’t so bad after all.”

“Not at all; she is an amazing person and very attached to Arianna.”

“You like her don’t you?” She says with an ornery grin.

“Mom, no match making, she has a boyfriend.”

“You didn’t tell me that when you were home.”

“It’s new, apparently they dated before Marianna got sick and they couldn’t make it work back then.”

“And now they’re trying again?”

“Guess so.”

“You really like her!”

“Mom, please!”

“It’s just an observation; let’s go meet my granddaughter.”

“Yes, let’s go.”

“Tanner this was a great morning; thank you for thinking of us.”

“I am always thinking of you Liz.”

“Oh Tanner you’re good for my ego.”

“I’m serious Liz; you are all I can think about.”

“Well, while Arianna is gone with Jonathan the next couple of days why don’t you come stay with me?”

“Are you serious?”

“Of course; it’ll be a good time for the two of us to be alone.”

“That sounds like Heaven Liz. I’ll drop you two off and go home to pack an overnight bag.”

“That works, but how about I let you know after she leaves.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

We pull up to the apartment building a few minutes later and as we get out of Tanner’s car I can’t help but scan the parking lot for Jonathan’s new pick up. I don’t see it, thankfully.

Tanner clears his throat to get my attention and I look at him questioningly.

“Doesn’t look like they’re back yet, you’re safe for now.” he smiles and kisses my forehead.

“Looks like it. I’ll let you know.” I kiss his lips quickly and usher Arianna to the stairs and then the apartment. I’m not looking forward to these next few hours.

“Look what you’ve got me into Sis, thanks a lot!” I look to the Heavens and frown.

“Well, Mom we’re here; home away from home.”

“It looks like a very nice place son. You said Lizzie lives here too, right?”

“Yep, that’s why I chose here. I’m close by for Arianna.”

“And you’re close by for Lizzie too.” She smiles and gets out of my pick up.

“Mother.” She waves me off and starts towards the sidewalk.

“Which is yours my boy? I am a bit tired.”

And that is the end of that conversation, for now anyway.
